LAKESIDE ADVENTURE PARK

By Jonathan Aedeke Okiria

On a sunny Saturday afternoon my colleagues and I set off to KK beach in Ggaba on the shores of Lake Victoria south of Kampala, to begin a day of adventure at Lakeside Adventure Park located on Bule Island Kyagwe, Mukono a 45 minute boat ride across the lake from Ggaba or Munyonyo. We found Perfect the operations manager of the park anxiously waiting for us at the jetty as he had a group of church children joining us that day for the adventure as well. The park is ideal for corporate team building, school, church and family retreats or getaways.

Lakeside Adventure Park operates two boats from KK beach to transport clients to and from their little paradise. One boat seats 7 people and costs 60,000/= to hire to and from the park, while the other seats 20 people and costs 300,000/= . The boat ride from KK beach was calm and interesting as Perfect explained a few facts about the lake and its surroundings en route to the park. We arrived 40 minutes later at the park’s private jetty and sandy beach with a huge neat garden next to it. Lakeside Adventure Park is neighbors with Lagoon resort and two other private beaches all located along a quiet bay on the lake in Kyagwe, Mukono.
We did not waste any time and immediately began a tour of the adventure park with Perfect being our guide. From the gardens there is a bar and lounge area from which one can enjoy the cool breeze off the lake, rest, refresh and prepare themselves for the adventure courses at the park. Next to this area is the actual adventure course comprised of two levels each with different tasks/challenges. Level one is the beginner challenge with 10 tasks including a zip line.

Level two is a more challenging course and is only approached upon completing level one, it also has 10 harder challenges than level one and also ends with a zip line. Safety is paramount at the park and adventure activities are overseen by guides, supervisors, safety lines and rules that one has to follow while performing these activities. We let the church team start as they were more than us in number and we joined in later only to find out that the tasks were not as simple as they looked, completely exhausting but interesting and and worth it.

Accommodation
Lakeside Adventure Park has different accommodation packages for different clients. It has 4 bandas although only two were operational with eco style bathrooms on the outside next to each of the bandas. There are dormitories for teams that wish to spend days at the park, the dorms are divided into boys and girl sections each with 15 beds and separate washrooms and showers to accommodate large numbers. There is also a family house at the park with two self contained bedrooms, a living room, private kitchen with gas, solar power to mention a few features. Camping facilities are also available at the park.
During the brief tour the owner of the park, a lovely lady called Eugene joined us and showed us some other projects the park is undertaking which include expansion and building other levels of challenges. She brought us a picnic lunch that she had personally prepared for us before we started the activities.

The kitchen at Lakeside can prepare meals for up to 100 people but this is done on reservation only. The restaurant area also can seat up to 40 people and is set on the upper side of the park in the middle of a well kept cool garden.
After we had our fill with lunch we engaged in the park activities after which we relaxed at the beach although swimming is not advised due to Bilharzia in the lake. For those that love fishing, the park has a couple of fishing rods that one can use to fish from the jetty/pier. At about 5.30 we set off on the boat back to KK beach although the ride was a bit longer because of the slightly rough lake, with medium sized waves battering the boat from time to time, there was nothing to worry about as we all wore life jackets. The trip to Lakeside is highly advised for teams, schools, corporate team building and just for adventure. It is the only establishment of its kind in Uganda and also affordable.
