Horse Back Safaris from Mihingo Lodge
I was aware that one could go horse riding from Mihingo Lodge but it was only when I heard that they had some new thoroughbreds in addition to their Ethiopian/Somali ponies that I really tempted to go. Luckily my partner also enjoys riding so we booked to go down for a weekend to try it out.
After having watched Zebra, Waterbuck, Eland and Warthog watering at the lodge’s waterhole on the park boundary while enjoying an excellent three course lunch, I was eager to get started with our sunset ride.                                                More
Most people think that Lantana (see photo) is a wonderful exotic garden plant, it is drought resistant, constantly flowering providing vibrant colour and attracts those beautiful butterflies. What most people don't realise is that Lantana is actually on the top 10 of exotic pest plants in the world.
Perceived benefits of lantana
As habitat Lantana thickets can provide a substitute habitat for birds, animals and butterflies where they have replaced the natural understorey vegetation. The weed is also considered to be useful in steep areas and stream banks for stabilising soil and preventing erosion. As a source of income the sale of ornamental lantana provides income for the nursery industry.                                                                      More
The word massage is thought to have been derived from either the French word ‘massage’ meaning ‘friction or kneading’, the Arabic word ‘massa’ meaning ‘to touch, feel or handle’ or even the Hebrew word ‘me-sakj’   Whatever the origins of its name, Massage Therapy today, can be defined as the ‘manual manipulation of the soft tissue of the body, which has physical, functional and even psychological purposes and goals.’
Hippocrates (460BC – 380BC), thought to be the ‘father of medicine,’ had this to say about massage. “The physician must be experienced in many things, but most assuredly in rubbing; for rubbing can loosen a joint that is too tight, or bind a joint that is too loose.”

If I go out for dinner, I don’t normally consider dining out in a hotel restaurant unless it is at The Oriental Simply Thai at The Metropole Hotel or the seafood night at The Kampala Serena Hotel, but I had heard that The Protea Hotel on Acacia Avenue had a pleasant location so I thought I would go and try it out.
Sure enough the setting and ambiance of the restaurant are delightful; it is set in a courtyard with a water feature and fountain and far enough away from the bar. They also play good background music with a mixture of lounge and Latin music that can be subtly heard. As we entered a waiter was quick to notice us and directed us to a free table outside. Once seated, we were offered drinks.            More

In our last article we looked at post exposure prophylaxis for rape or those who wake up in the morning and think “that was stupid”. The main point is that a badly chosen boyfriend is as likely to give you a STD as a rapist, and the only safe sexual partner is a monogamous permanent relationship. (What we used to call a marriage.)
The YEMNCNM (young educated mobile non-celibate non-monogamous) man is known and avoided by sensible Ugandan girls, who don’t trust him, laugh at his bullshit, and if attracted would expect an HIV check as a minimum before going out with him. So the poor old yemncnm targets short term visitors instead. The problem is most girls come in too late for proper post exposure prophylaxis, so the big summary of last month’s article is come in within 24 hours if possible, though up to 72 hours is still OK.                                                                                                      More

Kampala has a vibrant art scene with a big number of young and older, well known artists, producing wonderful art pieces in a many styles and sizes. Their works are shown regularly in several galleries in town, the most active galleries being:
Tulifanya Gallery, on Hannington Road, opposite Crested Towers, represents a number of famous Ugandan artists, over 20 young artists, twice a year showing Sudanese and/or Kenyan artists in monthly exhibitions. Nice and quiet location, with coffee shop in the garden, for coffee and lunches.
AfriArt Gallery is located in the UMA Showground, Lugogo, having regular shows of younger Ugandan artists.
Makerere University Exhibition Hall, on the university campus, at the Margret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts, has a new management, which has a much improved programme for their Fine Art exhibitions.                                          More
