In February Carol Walton, Pamela Wright & I climbed Mt Elgon to raise money for the Acid Survivors Foundation, Uganda.  We spent the first night at the Forest Exploration Centre at Kapkwai, surviving earthquake and an attack by killer safari ants, and the next day we set off in brilliant sunshine to climb the mountain.       More

At the end of last month’s article I promised to cover trees that are medicinal, attract birds, etc. so I had to think of a species that does more than one thing at a time – sort of arboreal ‘multi-taskers”.  New “Wonder Trees” hit the Ugandan headlines every few years.  Prunus is no exception. Such trees can get people quite excited.                                                                                                                                      More
Firstly a nurturing environment is irreplaceable. Turkey is known for a diversity of food stuffs due to its rich flora, fauna and regional differentiation and the legacy of an imperial kitchen is inescapable. Secondly, hundreds of cooks specializing in different types of dishes, all eager to please the royal palate, no doubt.               More

When you pass by the reception hall of Ndere Centre on Ntinda-Kisaasi Road, you will have the feeling that you have arrived on a peaceful island. It is not only the unique architectural design and the nice gardens, it is the atmosphere of Ugandan culture and art which makes you want to stay in this place.                                      More

The view overlooking Lake Mburo National Park was breathtaking.  The sun had already burnt off the early morning mist and the watering hole, which was perfectly placed, enticed a large group of Ugandan Kob and a few Eland down for a drink.  The undulating hills rolled into the heat haze and the vast area.                               More
Budongo Central Forest Reserve is the largest surviving Natural Forest in Uganda with a total surface area of 825 sq. km. It straddles across three Districts of Masindi, Hoima and the newly created Buliisa District. This is a true Forest!  Very little illegal activity and encroachment has ensured that the Forest remains as Nature indeed intended it to be.                                                                                                                     More
‘KAMPALA’ is the title of a new colourful coffee table book about life in the capital city the way it really is. Do not expect to see static pictures of buildings and historical sights, the book is bustling with activity, colours, movement and people of all ages going about their daily lives. Rebke Klokke, photographer, and Babette du Marchie Sarvaas, agricultural economist, embarked on this project.                       More
The Pajero is a standard in its class - with its 25 yearlong history since its introduction in 1982. Sold in over 170 Countries and regions today, Pajero has established a rock-firm reputation among customers as an all-round sport-utility vehicle (SUV) that delivers go-anywhere off-road performance with the high-speed cruising performance and comfort of a sedan.                                                               More
There were no uniforms. Outfits varied from tight fitting lycra second-skins (leaving little to the imagination) to dress jeans and polished shoes! Teams came in all shapes, sizes and a wide range of ages. For many it was the first time that they had the opportunity to participate in such a race. While sports the world over struggle to pull in the crowds this was an exception.                                                                        More
